Texts on body modification & discrimination:

As someone asked wewantrevolutiongirlstylenow about texts regarding women being discriminated against because of body modification and the list I made was too long to fit in her ask box - here is a list of the texts I found useful for anyone that wants it - most of these are about tattoos & women as my dissertation focused on that but a few are more general & all are worth a read! My dissertation was about the motivations and experiences of tattooed women so a few may have creeped in here that are more about motivations for getting tattooed - I tried to filter those out but they’re all interesting either way!

Goffman, E. (1963) Stigma – Notes on the Management of A Spoiled Identity London: Penguin (this is not about body modification but Goffman’s theories on stigma are REALLY useful for applying to how people with body mods are treated)

Hawkes, D. Senn, C.Y. & Thom, C. (2004) ‘Factors That Influence Attitudes Toward Women With Tattoos’ Sex Roles 50 (9-10) pp 593 – 604

Holland, S. (2004) Alternative Femininities: Body, Age and Identity Oxford: Berg

Inckle, K. (2007) Writing on the Body – Thinking through Gendered Embodiment and Marked Flesh Newcastle: Cambridge Scholars Publishing

Jeffreys, S. (2000) ‘Body Art and Social Status: Cutting, Tattooing and Piercing from a Feminist Perspective’ Feminism & Psychology 10(4) pp.409-429 (worth a read just for how infuriating her arguments are - this article is an example of prejudice in itself!)

Mifflin, M. (1997) Bodies of Subversion – A Secret History of Women and Tattoo New York: Juno Books (apparently this is quite hard to get hold of but it’s an excellent text on this topic!!)

Osterud, A. (2009) The Tattooed Lady: A History Colorado: Speck Press (also excellent)

Pitts, V. (1999) ‘Body Modification, Self Mutilation & Agency in Media Accounts of a Subculture’ in Featherstone, M. (ed.) (2000) Body Modification London: Sage pp 291 - 304

Pitts, V. (2003) In the Flesh: The Cultural Politics of Body Modification New York: Palgrave Macmillan

Sanders, C. (1989) Customizing the Body – The Art and Culture of Tattooing Philadelphia: Temple University Press

Steward, S. (1990) Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos – A Social History of the Tattoo with Gangs, Sailors, and Street Corner Punks 1950 -1965 London: Harrington Park Press (I have a lot of problems with this text because of the way it presents tattooed women - particularly lesbians - but displays how women have been perceived in the past)

Swami, V. & Furnham, A. (2007) ‘Unattractive, promiscuous and Heavy Drinkers: Perceptions of Women With Tattoos’ Body Image 4 pp 343 – 352

Enjoy :)
